Copy/Move To Folder
Available for: Single or Multiple Files and Folders (in any combination)

This tool makes it easy to copy or move files or folders from one folder to another, or to copy files to multiple folders. To use this tool, select one or more files and/or folders to be copied or moved, right-click a selected item and choose Copy/Move To Folder from the ShellToys XP menu.

The files and folders you selected are shown at the top of the dialog. You can remove individual items from the list by selecting them and pressing Delete if you change your mind about copying or moving them.

Next, select the action to take. There are 4 actions to choose from:

  • Copy items to a different folder: copies the selected files and/or folders to any folder you choose.

  • Move items to a different folder: moves the selected files and/or folders to any folder you choose.

  • Copy items to multiple folders: copies the selected files to any number of folders, chosen by checking the box beside them in a tree-view.

  • Replace all matching items in a folder and its subfolders: searches the chosen folder and its subfolders for files with the same names as those selected, and replaces them with the selected files.

If you chose Copy items or Move items:

  1. In the Target folder field, enter the path to the folder to which you want to the files to be copied or moved, or click the Browse button to select a folder. If you want to create a new folder to copy or move items into, type its path into the Target folder field. The last 16 target folders are stored for easy reuse. You can clear this store at any time by clicking the Clear History button.

  2. Click OK to copy or move the listed items. If a file or folder with the same name already exists in the target folder, a prompt will give the choice of overwriting it, skipping the file, replacing all files without further prompts, or skipping all existing files without further prompts.

If you chose Replace all matching items:

  1. In the Target folder field, enter the path to the folder you want to search for matching items, or click the Browse button to select a folder. The last 16 target folders are stored for easy reuse. You can clear this store at any time by clicking the Clear History button.

  2. When you click OK, the Target folder and its subfolders will be searched for files with the same names as those in the list above. If a matching filename is found, it will be replaced with the file in the list. Because this option is intended to replace files, no prompts are shown when a file is being replaced. Therefore you should make sure that the Target folder and its subfolders don't contain any files you want to keep which have names that appear in the list.

If you chose Copy items to multiple folders:

  1. A tree-view of your computer's drives is shown, with checkboxes beside each drive and folder. Check the boxes beside any drive or folder to which you want to copy the selected files.

  2. When you click OK, the selected files will be copied to the folders with checkmarks beside them. If a file with the same name already exists in one of the target folders, a prompt will give the choice of overwriting it, skipping it, replacing all files without further prompts, or skipping all existing files without further prompts.
